Low Testosterone Symptoms in Men

Perhaps the best window into what it’s like to suffer from low testosterone symptoms comes from customer testimonials for testosterone replacement supplements:

“It was hard to admit that I had lost my interest in going to work, being a lover to my wife, being a parent, getting out of bed and doing much of anything at all. I was wondering if this feeling was ever going to subside?”[1]

It is easily apparent from this quote the impact low testosterone can have on your everyday life. So how do you know if you have low testosterone and what can you do about it? Let’s take a closer look at low testosterone symptoms in men.

The Symptoms

Given that testosterone regulates sex drive, the most noticeable symptom of low testosterone is decreased libido.

According to the Hormone Foundation’s Patient Guide to Testosterone Therapy in Adult Men With Androgen Deficiency Syndrome, additional symptoms include erectile dysfunction, lowered sperm count and infertility, breast enlargement or tenderness, reduced energy, hot flashes, and increased irritability.[2]

Low testosterone symptoms should be discussed with a doctor immediately. While some of these symptoms are part of the natural aging process, they could be the result of testosterone deficiency syndrome, also known as male menopause.

The Andropause Society estimates 19% of men over the age of 45 (that’s just under 2 million men) who live with Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TDS) haven’t yet been diagnosed.[3]

How to Know if You Have Low Testoserone

Your doctor can administer a simple blood test and tell you what your testosterone levels are. On the lowest end, normal male total testosterone range is about 300 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL). The upper limit is 1,000 ng/dL.[4]

Keep in mind there are several factors which influence testosterone levels. A low testosterone reading can result from:

  • Stress
  • Injury to the testicles
  • Testicular cancer
  • Treatment for testicular cancer
  • Obesity
  • Infection

Other genetic factors may also contribute to declining
testosterone levels.[5]

What Can Be Done About Low Testosterone?

If appropriate, doctors prescribe testosterone/hormone replacement therapy. Therapy counters the effects of hypogonadism by exogenously boosting testosterone levels. Popular methods for administering synthetic testosterone include injections, patches and skin gels.

While testosterone therapy replacement is safe, there are some side effects to be aware of including acne or oily skin, breast enlargement, increased red blood cell count, fluid retention, and stimulation of prostate tissue.[6]

While testosterone therapy increases sex drive and vitality, it isn’t necessarily a fountain of youth. Mayo Clinic experts caution:

“Although some men believe that taking testosterone medications may help them feel younger and more vigorous as they age, few rigorous studies have examined testosterone therapy in men who have healthy testosterone levels — and some small studies have revealed mixed results. For example, in one study healthy men who took testosterone medications increased muscle mass but didn’t gain strength.”[7]

Last Word on Low Testosterone

Do not despair if you suffer from symptoms of low testosterone. There are numerous options for treatment including testosterone replacement therapy. Eating well and exercising are simple ways to stimulate the body’s natural testosterone production.

If you do suffer from any low testosterone symptoms, your doctor can analyze your testosterone levels and prescribe appropriate treatment.
